Tapped by Brynne Asher

Anticipated Publication: November 1, 2023

From the Publisher:

From USA Today Bestselling author Brynne Asher comes a single-mom, protective-hero romantic suspense where he falls first.

My son and I are in danger. The life and death kind. The kind that forces me to make choices no mother should have to. I’ll do anything to keep my son safe and not sacrifice my responsibility to my patients.

I’m desperate. Desperate enough to beg broody Special Agent Micah Emmett for help. But he has a job, and it doesn’t include protecting me. Why should he? He doesn’t know me.

Or so I thought.

Because you can learn a lot about another person when they’re being tapped. And Micah has been watching me for a long time. Now the special agent is glued to my side.

And I’ve been tapped in more ways than one.

From the publisher:

Three grown women find escape and camaraderie on sorority row in a delightfully exhilarating novel about fresh starts, whether you want them or not, by New York Times bestselling author Jen Lancaster.

How fast can charity fundraiser CeCe Barclay’s unimpeachable society life come tumbling down?

One minute she’s speaking before Chicago’s glitterati. The next, her financier husband is wanted for embezzlement. Her assets seized and her fall mortifyingly public, CeCe grasps for refuge—and employment—as a sorority housemom at Eli Whitney University, her daughter Hayden’s alma mater.

Tasked with preparing a stately—but in CeCe’s estimation shabby—house for rush, CeCe isn’t the only one navigating a new life. Janelle Smith’s last experience as a housemother was at a Jersey strip club, where she witnessed a mob hit. To keep her safe until trial, WITSEC finds her a new identity and a housemom position on Eli Whitney’s sorority row, where Janelle’s conflict mediation and tolerance for high estrogen levels make her a star employee. For Hayden, a barista at a hopelessly hip off-campus café, the goal is to flee everything Barclay: the money, the scandals, and the exasperating family nonsense. What next?

Though CeCe’s not ready to sell her Chanel bag, she’s open to reinvention. Hayden might even admit she needs help in her new independent life. And Janelle’s due for a personal triumph. But big challenges loom between the alabaster columns of Eli Whitney, unexpected and dicey enough to bring them all together—if only to keep them from falling completely apart.

I’ve never read a Jen Lancaster book, and this one looks like a hilarious cross of Schitt’s Creek, The Sopranos, and rejection of wealth and snobbery. The Goodreads reviews are all over the place, so who knows what I’ll think!

Themes and Tropes: Second Chance, Proximity

Flame by Adriana Locke

Anticipated Publication: November 2, 2023

From the Publisher:

Wanted: A Marriage of Convenience
I swore I would only get married if my life depended on it.
Oh, the irony.
Because the universe took that as a challenge, I’m now in the market for a husband. But if I’m going to be stuck in a temporary marriage, I want it to be with the right man.
I might as well try to enjoy this experience, right?
Considering the circumstances, I need a protector—someone who will throw down for his short-term wife with no questions asked. He’ll be fit. Intelligent. My potential short-term husband will have a dry sense of humor. And, if I’m dreaming big, he’ll be drop-dead gorgeous and a little grumpy. Hot, grumpy men are so attractive.
I mean, if a marriage of convenience is the only way out of this precarious situation, I may as well look for a perfect, broody bodyguard, right?
It could be fun. Lots of fun.
Especially if the one man I know who fits the bill will play along.
But, if Foxx Carmichael does agree to this crazy plan, for better or worse, death might do us part in a whole other way.

Raise the Bar by K.M. Gillis

Anticipated Publication: November 3, 2023

From the Publisher:

Maggie Morales is a woman on a mission. She’s ended a toxic relationship and is ready to find Mr. Right—if she can stop getting distracted by a certain serial-dating Mr. Right Now.

Callum Gallagher, everyone’s favorite multi-millionaire, prefers to rack up successes in the boardroom and the bedroom. He has everything and wants nothing. So why can’t he stop thinking about a woman he can’t have? And why does he keep going out of his way to be around her?

When Maggie decides to expand her esthetics line, Callum finds himself all too eager to help. An unlikely partnership forms and blurs the lines between business and pleasure, forcing a choice: Will they keep dancing around their undeniable chemistry? Or will they risk heartbreak for the chance to get everything they really want?

Author’s Note: Raise The Bar is the second book in the Love in 2C romantic comedy series. Recommended for anyone who enjoys witty banter, swoon-worthy spicy scenes and happily ever afters. Perfect for fans of Tessa Bailey, Amy Lea, and Stephanie Archer.

The first book in the series, Running Into You, was really cute and better than I expected, so I’m looking forward to the sequel!

Never Wager With a Wallflower by Virginia Heath

Anticipated Publication: November 7, 2023

From the Publisher:

The third and final delightful installment in the Merriwell Sister’s Regency rom-com series.

Miss Venus Merriwell has been waiting for her prince to come since the tender age of fourteen. She wants a man who is selfless, academic like her, and free from all the wretched vices her gambler father enjoyed far too much before he left the Merriwell sisters practically destitute. Unfortunately, after a slew of romantic disappointments, there is still no sign of that prince at twenty-three and the only one true love of her life is the bursting-at-the-seams orphanage in Covent Garden that she works tirelessly for. An orphanage that desperately needs to expand into the empty building next door.

For Galahad Sinclair, gambling isn’t just his life, it’s in his blood. He grew up and learned the trade at his grandfather’s knee in a tavern on the far away banks of the Hudson in New York. But when fate took all that away and dragged him across the sea to London, it made sense to set up shop here. He’s spent five years making a success out of his gaming hell in the sleazy docks of the East End. Enough that he can finally afford to buy the pleasure palace of his dreams—and where better than in the capital’s sinful heart, Covent Garden? The only fly in his ointment is the perfect building he’s just bought to put it in also happens to be right next door to the orphanage run by his cousin’s wife’s youngest sister. A pious, disapproving and unsettling siren he has avoided like the plague since she flattened him five years ago…

While Venus and Galahad lock horns over practically everything, and while her malevolent orphans do their darndest to sabotage his lifelong dream, can either of them take the ultimate gamble—and learn to love thy neighbor?

“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

Dr. Fake Fiancé by Louise Bay

Anticipated Publication: November 9, 2023

She’s famous. He hasn’t a clue who she is.

I’m in London, in disguise, trying to hide from the tabloids, when I slam into a wall. Except it’s not a wall. It’s a hot hunk of British man. And I just poured scorching hot coffee all over him.

He goes from burn victim to my fiancé in three days flat. It’s all fake to divert tabloid attention away from my recent breakup with my longtime boyfriend-turned-traitor.

Except it doesn’t feel fake. The way he looks at me makes me shiver. When he touches me, I’m molten lava.

Neither of us is looking for anything serious. Except…did I tell you how hot he looks playing naked Twister? He might just be husband material. For real.

A standalone fake relationship romance in the Doctors Series.

Roommate Wars by Jules Barnard

Anticipated publication: November 10, 2023

From the publisher:

Having a one-night stand with my sister’s billionaire friend was a mistake…But moving in with the reclusive billionaire would be an even bigger problem. Besides the unfortunate time we slept together, the only thing Jack Townsend and I have in common is our aversion to serious relationships.

But after he sees the sh*thole I’m living in, he sweetens the offer to stay in his swanky home with the one thing an impoverished government worker like me can’t turn down—free rent.

He makes it clear he’s not interested—our sizzling night together was barely a blip on his playboy radar. I don’t know if I should be offended or relieved.

Either way, my heart says no, but my mouth says yes. And my head says it’s not a handout; I’d be helping him around the house. One minute I’m washing his designer boxer-briefs, and the next Jack has me pretending to be his girlfriend to ward off the gold diggers.

I don’t need the confusion of a fake relationship, but I could do worse than playing house with a handsome billionaire. Besides, he’s already seen me naked. What could possibly go wrong?

We got a glimpse of these two strong-willed and pretty hilarious characters in Landlord Wars, so I’m excited to see what happens between them (BTW—not necessary to read the first book to enjoy this one).

A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch by Sarah Hawley

Anticipated Publication: November 28, 2023

From the Publisher:

Calladia Cunnington curses the day she met Astaroth the demon, but when he shows up memoryless, why does she find him so helpless . . . and sort of hot?

Calladia Cunnington knows she’s rough around the edges, despite being the heir to one of small-town Glimmer Falls’ founding witch families. While her gym obsession is a great outlet for her anxieties and anger, her hot temper still gets the best of her and manifests in bar brawls. When Calladia saves someone from a demon attack one night, though, she’s happy to put her magic and rage to good use . . . until she realizes the man she saved is none other than Astaroth, the ruthless demon who orchestrated a soul bargain on her best friend.

Astaroth is a legendary soul bargainer and one of the nine members of the demon high council—except he can’t remember any of this. Suffering from amnesia after being banished to the mortal plane, Astaroth doesn’t know why a demon named Moloch is after him, nor why the muscular, angry, hot-in-a-terrifying-way witch who saved him hates him so much.

Unable to leave anyone in such a vulnerable state—even the most despicable demon—Calladia grudgingly decides to help him. (Besides, punching an amnesiac would be in poor taste.) The two set out on an uneasy road trip to find the witch who might be able to restore Astaroth’s memory so they can learn how to defeat Moloch. Calladia vows that once Astaroth is cured, she’ll kick his ass, but the more time she spends with the snarky yet utterly charming demon, the more she realizes she likes this new, improved Astaroth . . . and maybe she doesn’t want him to recover his memories, after all.
