Middle of the Night brings all the unsettling creepiness, nighttime haunting, and mystery you can imagine.
Thirty years ago, ten-year-old Ethan was camping out in his super-safe suburban backyard with his best friend Billy. He wakes up the next morning, Billy is gone, and there’s a slash in the tent. Sometime in the middle of the night, Billy just vanished. No one has ever found him, and Ethan has never been able to remember anything from that night or to shake the guilt, insomnia, and terrifying nightmares.
Now Ethan is living in his childhood home for the first time in many years, and strange things start happening, mostly in the middle of the night. Symbols only he or Billy would understand. Someone lurking in the woods. A creepy and secret (now closed) research institute nearby. Is he crazy? He doesn’t know. But he’s had enough of not knowing and decides to investigate…and try to remember.
Loved Middle of the Night! The flashbacks and multiple points of view really worked for this book. The story is told first-person from Ethan’s present point of view, and third-person for everything else. This allowed the author to present certain details, character insights, events, and twists at the perfect times. You really get to know the characters and see their layers, see so many possible suspects, it’s riveting!
